Helliwell joined Supertramp in 1973, and his distinctive saxophone and clarinet solos became a signature element of the band’s sound. His contributions to hits such as “The Logical Song,” “Breakfast in America,” “Crime of the Century,” and “Take the Long Way Home” are particularly memorable.
Helliwell’s career has also included collaborations with prominent artists like Pink Floyd and Jean-Jacques Goldman. In addition to his work with Supertramp, Helliwell has pursued various musical projects, including leading his jazz ensemble, the Super Big Tramp Band, which reinterprets Supertramp’s music in a big band jazz format.
Helliwell’s solo projects, such as the album “Ever Open Door” released in 2020, showcase his talent on both the saxophone and clarinet, blending jazz with other musical influences.
Beyond his musical achievements, Helliwell is known for his engaging stage presence and sense of humour. His enduring impact on both rock and jazz music underscores his versatility and dedication as an artist.

Born in Switzerland in 1969, he began his career as a solo clarinetist under Claudio Abbado with prestigious ensembles like the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. At 22, he became the solo bass clarinettist at the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, serving for 15 years. During this time, his passion for conducting grew, leading him to his first concerts in 1996, influenced by mentors such as Armin Jordan, James Levine, and Yuri Temirkanov.

The bands
CARL VERHEYEN BAND
Carl Verheyen is bringing his five-member Carl Verheyen Band to CERN. Carl’s band includes longtime collaborator and bassist Dave Marotta (Phil Collins, Gino Vanelli, Burt Bacharach), ace drummer John Mader (Bonnie Raitt, John Fogerty, Steve Miller) and keyboardist and guitarist Troy Dexter (Wilson Phillips, Venice). Together, these world-class musicians perform a stunning mix of rock, blues, jazz, country and more. The recent addition of Hollye Dexter on background vocals adds four-part harmony to the already virtuoso musicianship.
THE ORCHESTRE DES NATIONS
The Orchestre des Nations (ODN) fosters peace and cultural dialogue through music, bridging international and local communities. Comprising highly trained amateur musicians, the ODN offers a platform for these individuals to perform at a professional level. Under the leadership of renowned conductor Antoine Marguier since 2011, the orchestra has garnered acclaim for its exceptional musicianship and vibrant performances. Their diverse programs, performed in prestigious venues and unconventional spaces alike, aim to make classical music accessible and engaging for all audiences.
LES HORRIBLES CERNETTES
Born at CERN in 1990 from a high-energy electron-proton collision, The Cernettes aren’t your average rock band. Instead of dreaming of stardom, they’re dreaming of discovering Dark Matter. These physics-packing pop sensations, with harmonies as precise as a particle accelerator, have turned the world of science upside down. For over thirty years, they have been CERN’s flagship band for all events and even ended up as a milestone becoming the Web’s first photo of a band.
They have been called the Supremes of subatomic particles. Their songs are a quirky cocktail of sixities melodies and modern beats, all wrapped up in a physics-themed bow. From the heart-wrenching ballad about a lonely quark to the upbeat anthem about particles partying, The Cernettes have a song for every subatomic situation. So, if you’re tired of your pop stars singing about heartbreak and fame, why not try a love song to a hadron collider?
Colette Marx-Nielsen, from Scotland, lives on the Côte d’Azur, teaching singing and performing for 20 years. She specialises in Musical Theatre, directs ISM Voices and the Monaco Choir Belles. With a repertoire spanning classical to jazz, she joined Les Horribles Cernettes in 1991.
Six-time WAMMIE winner Lynn Véronneau, originally from Montréal, leads Veronneau, an acoustic jazz duo with a global twist. She co-curated the Strathmore Jazz Samba Project and was part of Les Horribles Cernettes, the first band featured on the World Wide Web.
Angela Higney’s music has appeared on over 200 000 CDs. Performing across Europe, she switches between multiple languages and genres. She joined Les Horribles Cernettes in 1991 and is a certified CoreSinging® teacher.
Michele, a founding member of Les Horribles Cernettes, transitioned from a CERN career to contemporary dance and Pilates. She now lives in Mauritius, continuing to perform and record music, and sings with the choir “Island Voices.”
MISS PROPER AND THE MOVING TARGETS
Miss Proper and the Moving Targets is an international rock group formed at CERN in 2009, specializing in unique takes on the biggest pop and classic rock hits. The songs are full of surprises with original riffs and arrangements that will make you laugh, headbang, and sing along. Possibly all at the same time.
With “Miss Proper and the Moving Targets”, you’ll experience the best of both worlds – rock and pop hits, all served up with a heavy dose of humour and attitude. Come rock with us and let’s make some noise!
CANETTES BLUES BAND
The Canettes Blues Band has been entertaining music lovers in the Geneva area since the late 2nd millennium. Specialising in Versoix Delta Blues, the Canettes are adored for their spectacular, high-energy performances wherever they go (and even some places they don’t go). Their repertoire includes a mix of originals and original interpretations of the greats in Blues and R&B, including Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Freddie King and Ray Charles. You can find the Canettes on Spotify, YouTube, eight track, cassette and often at your local pub (not necessarily performing).
DIRACULA
Founded in the depths of the Antimatter Factory at CERN in 2015, Diracula is a high-energy, rock and roll cover band that plays tunes from the ‘60s to the present. From classic rock standards to modern post-punk numbers to rock interpretations of pop songs, Diracula has something for every CERN generation.
OLIVER STREET BAND
Oliver Street Band is an original traditional jazz ensemble known for its eclectic mix of members: a virtuoso classical pianist, a rock drummer, and a street clarinetist. This unique combination creates a dynamic sound that delivers breathtaking energy and spine-chilling emotions. Their music, deeply emotive and meticulously crafted, spans a repertoire from Louis Armstrong to Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington, covering the 1920s to the 1970s. The band aims not to showcase modern dissonant jazz chords but to share a passion for jazz and provide a soothing, communal experience. They have recently added a talented double bassist and an experienced singer passionate about this era’s music, enhancing their ability to spread joy through their performances.

Meet our hosts
PAOLA CATAPANO
“It has been a privilege for me to spend three of CERN’s seven decades serving its extraordinary community and communicating its unique values. I took my first CERN steps as the personal assistant to a key figure of the Laboratory (a Director General with a Nobel!). That was just the beginning of an extraordinarily fulfilling career, spanning through the 40th, 50th and 60th anniversaries, half a dozen Open Days, live broadcasts featuring historical milestones and much more.
CERN for me is not just my workplace, it’s my home, an important part of my identity and the best place to be for a passionate science communicator and a convinced advocate of the importance of scientific culture for a better human society.”
STEPHAN PETIT
“I set foot at CERN for the very first time in 1994, as an intern doing software engineering. That was almost half the age of CERN ago! Since then, in addition to my primary work assignments, I have regularly had the chance to participate in various outreach and science communication activities, sharing my passion for science.
I have met many individuals, each contributing their unique perspective on our community’s collective work, witnessing firsthand the laboratory’s growth and our collective achievements. I am enthused by the future challenges we have set for ourselves.
I am very excited to co-host this event with Paola and look forward to sharing this special moment with her.”
